A Leeds man who prevented a potential terrorist attack outside St James’ Hospital in Leeds was today (Wednesday, March 25) presented with the George Medal for bravery by His Majesty King Charles III.
Nathan Newby G.M., age 35, intervened to prevent clinical support worker Mohammed Farooq from bombing the hospital and attacking staff on January 20, 2023.
Mr Newby engaged with Farooq, who had knives, an imitation firearm and an improvised bomb. He persuaded him to move away from the hospital building and kept him calm until police arrived.
Farooq was later found guilty at Sheffield Crown Court of preparing acts of terrorism and was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 37 years.
Detective Superintendent Paul Greenwood is the Head of Investigations for Counter Terrorism Policing North East. He said: “Nathan Newby G.M.’s intervention that night prevented a potentially devastating attack on the hospital.
“Thanks to Nathan’s remarkable bravery and his calmness, he prevented Farooq from inflicting a significant loss of life.
“Nathan was the right person, in the right place, at the right time, and we are deeply grateful for his heroic actions. We are extremely pleased that Nathan’s courage has now been officially recognised.”
