Our next podcast guest talks us through working with convicted terrorists in the community

“I’m used to managing risk throughout my career and it didn’t phase me” our next podcast guest talks us through working with convicted terrorists in the community

Content warning: this episode contains references to death and sexual abuse which some listeners might find distressing.

In this week’s episode of our Inside Counter Terrorism Policing podcast, we’re introducing you to ‘Jenna’, who has a day job like no other: working with those convicted of terrorism offences who after serving their prison sentences, are now living in the community.

A career detective who swapped village life for policing the streets of London, Jenna now works in Nominal Management at Counter Terrorism Policing. The word ‘nominal’ is the term for people who have committed a criminal offence – in this case, people convicted of terrorism offences.

In this episode, she talks about her early years in policing working on high-profile cases, including the Grenfell Tower fire, and historic sexual abuse cases. She speaks openly about how those cases helped shape her career and hone the skills needed for the daily decisions she now faces.

In this episode, Jenna talks candidly about how she and her team deal with those pressures and apply the guardrails to keep the public safe once offenders are released from prison.

Her episode was released today (Thursday 26 March), and is available on Acast, Spotify and Apple. And we have more to come, with a new episode available every Thursday until mid April. They are:

  • Clara (out now):  From hostage negotiator to hostile environments
  • Tom (out now): from diffusing bombs in warzones to keeping the streets of London safe
  • Jenna (out now): what it’s like working with convicted terrorists in the community
  • Grace (out on 2 April): Thwarting attacks through online intelligence
  • Alex (out on 9 April): from city lawyer to national security incidents

You can find and listen to these, and the episodes from series 1, wherever you get your podcasts
