Cleckheaton Man Jailed for Multiple Terrorism Offences

A 36-year-old man has been sentenced to four years and nine months after pleading guilty to multiple terrorism offences.

Tyler Crowther, 36, has been sentenced to four years and nine months

Tygue Crowther, from Cleckheaton was convicted of the following offences:

  • 1 count of encouragement of terrorism, contrary to Section 1 of the Terrorism Act 2006
  • 1 count of dissemination of a terrorist publication, contrary to Section 2 of Terrorism Act 2006
  • 6 counts of possession of documents likely to be useful to a terrorist, contrary to Section 58 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

Crowther was arrested in June 2024 and during a house search, officers recovered digital devices. Following the devices being searched thoroughly, the investigation uncovered that Crowther had a library of terrorist publications. He also publicly shared extreme right-wing views and nazi propaganda along with instructional material that could assist someone to commit an act of terrorism.

Crowther wanted to set up his own right wing neo nazi group and used an alias on social media to share racist and antisemitic views, in an attempt to recruit like-minded people.

He was sentenced today (Friday February 6) at Newcastle Crown Court. He was also handed an additional one year on extended licence to be served with his sentence.

Head of Counter Terrorism Policing North East, Detective Chief Superintendent James Dunkerley said: “Viewing and sharing terrorist documents is not a victimless crime and just one document such as Crowther shared could lead to countless others being radicalised.

“The content of these kinds of publications is hateful, divisive, and they encourage others to commit violent attacks.

“Those that seek to divide our communities through sharing extremist material will be identified and brought to justice.”
