A man armed with a machete who assaulted members of the public has been sentenced

Man armed with a machete who assaulted members of the public has been sentenced to eight years in prison.

Jamal Walker-Bailey (26/5/99), of Burford Road, Whalley Range, was found guilty of two counts of attempted GBH after a trial at Manchester Crown Court that ended on Friday 1 August 2025.

He earlier pleaded guilty to affray, possession of a bladed article and possession with intent to supply cannabis but was cleared of assaulting a police officer.

Jamal Walker-Bailey has been sentenced for eight years.

Today (Monday 4 August 2025), he was sentenced to eight years in prison at the same court. Walker-Bailey will serve an additional one year on license.

Officers were called to Whalley Range in Manchester on 23 January this year to reports of a man armed with a machete and attacking members of the public and their vehicles.

When response officers arrived on the scene, they tasered him and he was subsequently arrested.

Based on comments made by Walker-Bailey during the incident and his arrest, the CPS submitted to the court during trial that the offences committed may have a terrorism connection.

Therefore, to ensure a consistent approach between policing and the CPS, the investigation was led by Counter Terrorism Policing North West.

This submission from the CPS was accepted by the judge and is reflected in the sentence which has been passed.

Detective Superintendent Ben Cottam, Head of Investigations for CTPNW, said: “Walker-Bailey went on a rampage armed with a machete – fortunately no-one was seriously injured.

“He approached innocent members of the public and, completely unprovoked, violently assaulted them. He then turned his focus to vehicles and smashed the window of a car with a machete when it approached a crossing before doing the same to a police car once it arrived on scene.

“His actions put members of the public and police officers at risk, and violence such as this has no place on our streets. He is quite rightly starting a lengthy term in prison and we’re grateful to the judge for the sentence passed.”
